Share Our Strength Commends White House on Planting of Organic Garden
First Lady Michelle Obama's Organic Vegetable Garden at the White House Attracts Attention.
March 20, 2009
Washington, DC—Share Our Strength founder and executive director Bill Shore issued the following statement regarding First Lady Michelle Obama's planting of an organic vegetable garden on the grounds of the White House today.
"Share Our Strength commends First Lady Michelle Obama for her commitment to promoting healthy eating habits, particularly among America's children. The First Lady has begun a national conversation about the importance of childhood nutrition, and today's planting further increases awareness of the need to improve the odds for America's children.
Today more than 12 million children in the United States are at risk of hunger, which means they don't have reliable access to the nutritious food they need to thrive. We applaud the First Lady's efforts to bring attention to the need for all children in the United States to have consistent access to healthy fruits and vegetables and nutritious meals. Hunger and poor nutrition can have lifelong negative effects on a child's health and education, and one in six children in the United States are at risk.
It is our hope that the momentum provided by the First Lady will continue, and childhood nutrition will become a national priority. With leadership in the White House and Congress, our country can begin to address many of the issues surrounding hunger in America, such as the need for access to affordable fruits and vegetables in our inner cities; ensuring that all children in need have access to federally funded nutrition programs, and, ultimately, realizing President Obama's pledge and Share Our Strength's vision, to end childhood hunger in America by 2015."
