Sysco Receives Top Hunger Leadership Award
Share Our Strength Recognizes Support for Ending Childhood Hunger in America.
Share Our Strength®, the national organization working to make sure no child in America grows up hungry, presented Sysco with its top award, honoring Sysco 's dedication to ending childhood hunger in the United States.
Sysco Chairman and CEO Rick Schnieders received Share Our Strength's Great Oak Award on the company's behalf. Awarded only twice before in Share Our Strength's 25-year history, the award is reserved for an organization whose commitment to fighting hunger has grown deeper and stronger over time.
"Sysco 's support has steadily grown over the years," said Schneiders. "Our investment in Share Our Strength's Taste of the Nation® as a national sponsor was a natural fit for us in the food service industry. Today, we are proud to be an active partner and advocate in the fight to end childhood hunger in America."
Sysco began supporting Taste of the Nation in 2003 and has provided additional support for Share Our Strength's Great American Bake Sale®, a national campaign that mobilizes Americans to end childhood hunger by holding bake sales in their communities, and Share Our Strength's Great American Dine Out™, a new initiative where restaurants across the country donate a percentage of their sales to fight childhood hunger in America for one week in September.
Sysco 's growing support has allowed Share Our Strength grant recipients to serve 35 million meals to children, establish 926 new afterschool and summer food programs and teach more than 200,000 children about nutrition.
Share Our Strength presented the award Monday, Oct. 20 during its annual Conference of Leaders. The conference brings together more than 300 community leaders from across the United States to share ideas and recognize outstanding achievements in the fight to end hunger.
