Taste of the Nation sets fundraising record in fight to end childhood hunger

PORTSMOUTH — When Bill Shore and his sister Debbie founded Share Our Strength in 1984, they knew success would hinge on their steadfast belief that everyone is capable of making a difference in the fight to end childhood hunger.

Twenty-five years later, people around the nation continue to reaffirm that belief—including the 1,000 guests gathered on the lawn of Strawbery Banke Museum on the evening of June 24. PORTSMOUTH — In a time where the need is great, Taste of the Nation Portsmouth raised over $115,000 to combat childhood hunger in the region. With child hunger the focus of the fund-raising efforts, event sponsor Share Our Strength field manager Emily Huebner said one of the Seacoast’s largest culinary celebrations broke its previous record, drawing 800 guests in a year noted more for its economic woes than the spirit of giving. She said the success of the efforts have been different in every city, but the fact that many more are struggling appears to have hit home in the Seacoast.”It’s our neighbors,” Huebner said simply….. click here to read the entire story.

Food funds needed now more than ever

Last summer, on the longest day of the year, on a gorgeous warm evening, more than 800 people in the Seacoast community gathered under a big white tent in the middle of Strawbery Banke. They sampled some great food from more than 60 local restaurants, sipped fantastic wine and locally crafted beer and danced the night away to some great R&B music.They were also helping to end childhood hunger…. click here to read the entire story.

Food pantry thrilled with timely donation

PORTSMOUTH — For local families in need seeking healthy food during these hard times, a $7,514.69 grant from Share Our Strength Seacoast to the Seacoast Family Food Pantry in Portsmouth means more fresh produce and proteins this season. Diane Giese, executive director of the food pantry since September, said that the grant they received just before Christmas will go a long way in helping fight hunger for local families, especially during the economic recession. “What this money means for us is that we can we can get fresh produce and fresh protein — meats, chicken. The kinds of donations we get is great, we need it all, but it’s usually non-perishable. Now we have more flexibility and can get more of the healthier foods.”… click here to read the entire story.
