Our Impact

A Healthy Start to the School Year

49.1 million Americans - including nearly 17 million children - lack the means to regularly put enough nutritious food on the table. That's 1 in 4 children in America.

As school gets underway for 2010, 10.1 million kids don't get the free or reduced-price school breakfast they are eligible for. Studies have shown that lack of enough nutritious food impairs a child's ability to concentrate and perform well in school.

"In Maryland, we increased participation in school breakfast by 7% the first year, and started participating in the Afterschool Supper Program. Our goal was to have 20% of eligible sites participating in Afterschool Suppers in the first year and we exceeded that goal."
