NEW PARTNERSHIP TO MAKE SURE NO KID GROWS UP HUNGRY IN MARYLAND
Three days before Thanksgiving, Maryland Governor Martin O’Malley and Share Our Strength Founder Bill Shore announced the Partnership to End Childhood Hunger in Maryland. This is Share Our Strength’s fourth state partnership in its plan to end childhood hunger in America.
“More than 184,000 kids in Maryland don’t have ready or reliable access to the food they need to lead healthy, active lives,” said Governor O’Malley at the November 24 announcement. “That’s inexcusable. I want Maryland to be the first state to end childhood hunger, and I’m confident that this Partnership will help us achieve this goal.”
Bill Shore said, “Our strategy to end childhood hunger is based on closing the gaps between existing public and private programs and the families who need them. In Maryland, too many eligible kids are missing out on available nutritious meals. This partnership will identify and close such gaps.”
Representative John Sarbanes (D-Md.), a champion of children’s issues and Dr. Nancy Grasmick, state Superintendent of Schools, joined Gov. O’Malley and Shore to outline the work that Maryland is already doing to achieve its goals and to introduce the Partnership’s action plan. The plan includes short-term goals for 2009 and reflects the governor’s desire to end childhood hunger in Maryland within five years.
