Improving the Quality of School Meals
National School Lunch Week Chef Learning Tours
Last fall, during National School Lunch Week, at the request of White House Assistant Chef Sam Kass, Share Our Strength paired Washington, DC chefs with D.C. public schools for a series of chef learning tours. Share Our Strength representatives accompanied the chefs as they headed into school cafeterias to eat with the kids, listen to school personnel, and learn about the obstacles schools often face in preparing fresh school meals.
School Meals Roundtable
Sponsored by Share Our Strength and the FEED Foundation
On the heels of National School Lunch week, Share Our Strength and the FEED Foundation convened a group of notable chefs and stakeholders from around the country for a roundtable discussion on improving the quality of foods served in schools. U.S. Department of Agriculture Deputy Undersecretary Janey Thornton, head of the Food and Nutrition Service, attended and participated in an open dialogue with the chefs, many of whom run school food service programs and are leading the movement to bring fresh ingredients and cooking from scratch back to our nation's schools.
The group of innovators shared best practices, challenges and success stories as well as their ideas for ways in which Share Our Strength can use its assets to make an impact. Share Our Strength looks forward to fostering further dialogue and playing an active role in improving the quality of our nation's school meals.
