I once participated in a community Food Frugality Challenge, designed to educate people about what a family can afford on the amount provided by food stamps. Suffice to say that I was not living large that week. It was a real eye-opener about how difficult it is to eat nutritiously on very limited food dollars.I won’t claim that no food stamp recipients make stupid choices in their purchases or that none of them could scrape by without the help. I can tell you that the professionals who work with these programs say the vast majority of the recipients are struggling to feed their families and that this program is a dignified way of helping people who need food assistance.
