South Boston Grows a Garden

These days, a peculiar sight can be seen on the church grounds at 70 Devine Way in South Boston. There’s Arugula! Radishes! Lettuce! PEAS! And so many more fruits and vegetables!
You may ask, how is it that all of these delicious fruits and vegetables are growing right in the city? It’s all due to the passion and hard work of the people at South Boston Grows, the community of South Boston and the dedication of several Operation Frontline volunteers!
South Boston Grows is a nonprofit whose mission is to improve community green space and to increase knowledge of growing edible plants. Their long term goal is to increase access to, and consumption of fresh fruits, vegetables and herbs among under-served populations in South Boston. Through their program adults and youths in the community volunteer at least 3 days per week and take home food grown in the raised soil beds at the end of each day. South Boston Grows also distributes produce from the gardens up to four days a week to eligible citizens.
Earlier this summer, Operation Frontline Massachusetts hosted a service day at the community gardens at South Boston Grows. OFL volunteers teamed up with the staff of South Boston Grows and children of the community to plant various seeds and build soil beds in the gardens. The day was incredibly successful as over 30 volunteers participated in the day of service. We planted seeds for tomatoes, carrots, peppers, cucumbers, and many more. South Boston Grows will use the food grown in the gardens during an Operation Frontline course later this summer!
Communities in the Boston area continue to struggle with the lack of access to nutritious foods. Together, South Boston Grows, Operation Frontline and similar organizations increase access and awareness to healthy foods for people on a limited budget.
So the next time you find yourself in South Boston, make some time to visit 70 Devine Way. And if you’re able, lend a hand for a little aid, because a seed planted today allows South Boston Grows to give a ton of nutritious food away!
