Nationwide, Volunteer Bakers Team Up to End Childhood Hunger

Share Our Strength’s 2010 Great American Bake Sale season officially kicked off April 16 to 18 with the Great American Bake Sale National Challenge. More than 150 volunteers held bake sales in 37 states during the three days of the Challenge. Share Our Strength’s Great American Bake Sale also teamed up with some of the best food bloggers in the country for the National Challenge. Besides helping to spread the word, food bloggers organized the National Food Bloggers Bake Sale, holding bake sales in 21 states and raising $16,500 for the national challenge. Thank you all!
We are thrilled with our supporters’ enthusiasm and dedication. In fact, I’d like to share one volunteer’s story with you. Karen Lin, a New York City baker, held her first bake sale during the National Challenge. Read the following interview with Karen to learn how she helped bake a difference.
Why did you get involved and decide to host a bake sale? A friend told me about it after finding out that I am an avid home baker and enjoy doing charity work for children. After looking into Share Our Strength, I decided it would be the perfect event for me to hold.
Did you have help from other volunteers? Yes, most of my volunteers were my friends. I was floored by their kindness and willingness to help.
What did you sell? Vegan Green Tea Cupcakes with Almond Frosting, Strawberry Oatmeal Cupcake with Cream Cheese Frosting, Jameson Whiskey Chocolate Cupcake with Bailey’s Frosting, Vegan Fig Scones, Chocolate Cranberry Scones, Vegan Oatmeal Cookies, Pistachio Apricot Biscotti, Fois Gras Dog Biscuits, Homemade Ice Cream Sandwiches (my friend made vanilla and coffee ice cream), Sugar Cookies for Cookie Decorating (we had a decorating station with icing and sprinkles!)
What was the best-selling item? Everything sold out except for a few sugar cookies and biscotti. Strawberry Oatmeal Cupcakes and the Chocolate Cranberry Scones sold the fastest.
What was the highlight for you from the entire experience? It was just so much fun baking and then sharing my baked goods with my friends for a good cause. Having the kids come in to the cookie decorating stand was really fun too.
How much have you raised? Including online donations, I’ve raised about $900!
Are you planning to host another bake sale next year? YES!
There’s still plenty of time to host a bake sale. Join Karen and thousands of other bakers across the country who want to help make No Kid Hungry™ a reality. The Great American Bake Sale season runs until October 31. We would love to have you on board. Sign up today!
