Share Our Strength’s Grants at Work

Food TrustMark Bittman has quickly become one of my favorite food writers to follow. Some of my favorite recipes came from “The Minimalist” columns in the New York Times Magazine, and I was sad to see them end earlier this year. But it was the end of that column that turned me towards his other inspired writing that goes way beyond cooking to cover complex issues around food and nutrition in our society today, including hunger.

Last week he wrote poignantly about his decision to join other hunger advocates in fasting to call attention to Congressional budget proposals that would make huge cuts in programs for the poor and hungry. And on Wednesday, he wrote this article about a great organization in Philadelphia called the Food Trust. For the last three years, The Food Trust has been one of the Share Our Strength grantees that receive support from our Taste of the Nation event in Philadelphia.

What the Food Trust, Mark Bittman, and so many of our other No Kid Hungry partners understand so well is that hunger in our country isn’t about a lack of food – it is about access. As the article mentions, through their Healthy Corner Store Initiative, The Food Trust is helping families in low income neighborhoods in Philly access fresh and healthy food in places that previously offered them mostly empty calories. Recently, the Food Trust has become one of the pilot sites offering a new course from Share Our Strength’s Cooking Matters program, that teaches child care professionals about healthy meal preparation, helping to ensure access to healthy food for the kids in their care.

So, thanks to the Food Trust for helping to ensure that everyone has access to healthy, affordable food. And thanks to Mark Bittman for shining a national spotlight on their work and for being such a strong voice for policies and programs that can help us end childhood hunger.
