It’s Summer: Time for Fun, Learning, and Yummy Healthy Food!

Glassboro Child Development Centers in New Jersey is just one of the many creative summer programs in communities across America that combine fun, learning and healthy nutritious food.
Last summer, a grant from Share Our Strength helped Glassboro CDC extend its summer camp activities to kids who were attending a morning summer school program. Most of these kids were going home at noon time, with nothing to eat, and nothing to do in the afternoon.
Share Our Strength’s grant allowed the children to join the afternoon session, participate in performing arts, science, culinary and sports enrichment programs – and get a healthy lunch and an afternoon snack. Not only did these kids have fun, a skills-testing program showed that most of the kids increased their math proficiency over the summer, combating the traditional academic summer slide.
Glassboro plans to continue to continue this successful program this summer with help from another grant from Share Our Strength. Many of the program’s teens will even be returning as counselors-in-training and mentors for the younger kids.
If you’d like to hear more about summer meals programs, in the coming weeks, Share Our Strength staff will be touring summer meals programs, highlighting innovative ideas and practices. Follow along along as we visit Arkansas, Mississippi, Alabama and Tennessee and occasionally share success stories from other parts of the country as well. Learn more about summer meals.
