The Land of Nod Employees Fight Hunger

Posted by Sue Cortesi on Wednesday, December 15, 2010

Land of NodThe following is a guest post from Sue Cortesi, a member of the Executive Management team for The Land of Nod, a No Kid Hungry sponsor.

The Land of Nod held a kick-off event for our employees to highlight our involvement with the No Kid Hungry Campaign the week of Thanksgiving. Our objective was to engage our employees in the cause by providing them an old-fashioned sack lunch in a ‘lunch room’ setting and exposing them to campaign materials and the video of Jeff Bridges at the National Press club in Washington DC.

We really wanted to drive home the idea that there are so many kids in this country who don’t have access to ample nutritious food and actually go hungry every day. The lunch we provided was nostalgic – they had their choice of your classic PB&J, bologna or egg salad sandwich, chocolate or regular milk, fruit, chips and a cookie – all in a brown paper bag. Michelle Kohanzo (Director of Marketing and IT), Morgan Murray (HR admin/events) and myself all put on vintage aprons and played the part of ‘lunch lady’ that day to help hand out sack lunches at the corporate office and then delivered lunch to all of our store locations on the following day. We encouraged our employees to donate whatever they would have spent on lunch to No Kid Hungry, we were able to raise over $350 that day and the company matched that donation.

As a company we are planning several events to involve our employees and to raise funds in the coming months, including a bake sale with our partner Crate and Barrel, an employee ‘garage sale’, and trips to work in our local food pantry.

We’re really proud to be a part of this campaign and will continue to look for interesting ways to engage our employees throughout the year.

If you haven’t already, I encourage you to join us in taking the No Kid Hungry Pledge!
