Lose Weight and Help End Childhood Hunger

Lose for Good logoFall is right around the corner, and Weight Watchers® is once again kicking off its fourth annual Lose For Good® campaign to help fight hunger. The premise is simple – as members lose weight and participate in various Lose For Good activities now through October 15, Weight Watchers will donate up to $700,000 to benefit Share Our Strength’s No Kid Hungry® Campaign.

In total, the Weight Watchers Lose For Good program has raised $2.8 million for Share Our Strength over the past four years. Funds raised from last year’s Lose For Good campaign supports our work to increase access to school breakfast – a critical element in ensuring kids start their day off right.

Many of us know that breakfast is the most important meal of the day, but unfortunately, many families can’t provide their kids with a healthy breakfast before school. According to the “Hunger in Our Schools: Share Our Strength’s Teachers Report,” nearly 65 percent of public school K-8th grade teachers report there are children in their classrooms who regularly come to school hungry because they are not getting enough to eat at home. Without breakfast, kids might find themselves too hungry to learn.

The School Breakfast Program – which is offered to all students who qualify for free or reduced-price lunch – offers a solution. However, there is a significant gap between students who are eligible for School Breakfast and students who participate in it. Of the nearly 20 million students in the U.S. who ate free or reduced-price lunch in 2010, only 9.4 million participated in the School Breakfast Program.

With support from funds raised by the Weight Watchers Lose For Good program, our No Kid Hungry Campaign is taking proven steps to close the school breakfast gap. We’re working with elected officials, government agencies, corporations, schools leaders and organizations in key communities around the country to raise awareness about the School Breakfast Program and increase participation through innovative school breakfast models like Grab N’ Go breakfasts.

In addition to supporting our work to end childhood hunger in America, the Lose For Good campaign also generates funds for Action Against Hunger, an international humanitarian organization.
