It's Time to Dine Out

School is back in session and there are 10 million kids in America that qualify for school meals that are not getting them. Dine Out this month at a participating restaurant and you can help fund the organization that works to connect families and kids with programs like school meals and summer feeding sites.
During the week of September 19-25, 2010, thousands of restaurants will participate in Share Our Strength’s Great American Dine Out and put their creative juices together to raise funds in unique ways. Last year, I was able to connect with friends that I had not seen in months and dine out for a great cause. Many of my friends have already reached out to find out if we are dining again this year to help end childhood hunger in America. They loved the opportunity to take a night off from doing the dishes, get together with friends and dine out for the greater good. Plus, the restaurants that we visited were proud of helping make No Kid Hungry happen.
This year, I’ve already planned a few dine out activities with friends. The first night, at least 15 neighbors will join me at Buffalo Wild Wings. They are giving .50 cents from each sampler platter ordered to Share Our Strength. On Wednesday, I’m meeting friends at a local restaurant – Marlow’s Tavern - and can’t wait to order their truffle fries and make a donation for a discount coupon when I visit again.
On Thursday, a local organization is inviting their members to meet at Corner Bakery Café for breakfast. I plan to join them and make a donation for a coupon for a free whoopee pie on my next visit.
My neighbor Emma, who is 7 years old, plans to dine out too! We’ll clip out the Boston Market coupon in the Sunday, September 19th newspaper for a free kids meal – go to Boston Market – then make a donation for a free side dish on a future visit. On Friday, college friends will meet at PF Chang’s and order lettuce wraps - and another .50 will be donated to the No Kid Hungry campaign. On Saturday, I’ll head to TGI Friday’s to watch a football game, order something delish, and make a $5 donation for a coupon sheet that has a value of $15.
Plus, many restaurants launch their program a week or two early. That means that I can head to Joe’s Crabshack this weekend and purchase a No Kid Hungry t-shirt – nosh on their great seafood and make a donation for a free key lime pie dessert or crab nacho on a future visit!
All types of restaurants participate in the Great American Dine Out and there is something for every budget. As you can tell, I plan to take the entire week off from cooking – and for a great cause – making sure no kid in America grows up hungry.
I challenge you to call your family, friends and neighbors, take a break from cooking and find a participating restaurant near you. Restaurants are cooking up some great deals to end childhood hunger in America.
