My time at Share Our Strength

I’ve had the fortunate opportunity to spend the last four months working with Share Our Strength as a Presidential Management Fellow. My permanent job is with the USDA Food and Nutrition Service, the agency responsible for administering the nutrition assistance programs such as SNAP, the Summer Food Service Program and the National School Lunch Program and School Breakfast Program- programs that Share Our Strength knows well and supports. It has been a wonderful opportunity for me to learn more about how non-profit partners are helping to end childhood hunger, as well as to better understand how my agency can partner with organizations to reach more people.
I knew that I would enjoy working with an organization with such an inspirational mission, but I what I didn’t realize is that I too would be inspired. My time here at Share Our Strength has solidified for me that above all else, we all do have strengths to share. The opportunity to step outside the day-to-day responsibilities of my permanent job reminds me that it will take federal, state, and local governments, passionate individuals and dedicated organizations to reach the goal of ending childhood hunger. We all have a role to play, from writing the federal regulations that guide nutrition assistance programs, to serving students breakfast at school. It seems to me that the key to success lies in understanding how to make all of the pieces work together in the best way.
Sometimes, working together requires making an effort to see something from a different angle. If you have the opportunity, I recommend taking time to step outside of your routine to see things from a different perspective. It’s true, working together is often easier said than done but I know making the goal of No Kid Hungry a reality will be well worth the effort.
