A Five Year Plan to End Childhood Hunger in Colorado
Posted by Ruth Stemler on Wednesday, December 15, 2010
Earlier this week, Colorado Governor Bill Ritter announced the Colorado Campaign to End Childhood Hunger’s five-year plan at the Colorado Department of Education. Along with Hunger Free Colorado, Share Our Strength was a key non-profit partner in the Colorado campaign, and our nutrition education program, Cooking Matters, is fully integrated into the campaign’s new plan.
In the first year of the partnership, our campaign’s goals were to increase summer meals and school breakfast and to publish the five-year plan. Mission accomplished! Our achievements over the past year included:
- Serving nearly 1 million free meals this summer to children at community sites across Colorado. This represents a 26% increase compared to last year and the largest number of summer meals ever served in 3 decade history of the Colorado program.
- Serving more than 130,000 additional free and reduced-price breakfasts this October compared to a year ago during the School Breakfast Challenge.
Now that we’re moving beyond year one, we’re excited to share our road map for continued success. Here are our key goals, which are spelled out in more detail in the plan:
- Provide children access to healthy meals during the summer
- Ensure that all children have access to a nutritious breakfast
- Support families with the ability to purchase and acquire food to prepare at home
- Ensure the nutrition and health of pregnant and postpartum women, infants and young children
- Support child care providers’ ability to provide healthy meals and snacks
- Help afterschool programs provide children with good nutrition and healthy snacks
- Encourage children and families to make healthy food choices through nutrition education
- Ensure access to high-quality nutritious food in low-income communities and schools
- Ensure families can access food from food banks and food pantries
- Improve the economic security of working families
Share Our Strength has partnerships in a growing number of states – check back often, because we will continue to share updates throughout the year.
