VoltaggiosBryan and Michael Voltaggio served the meal of a lifetime on Tuesday night at Bryan’s restaurant VOLT in Frederick, Maryland as part of Share Our Strength’s A Tasteful Pursuit dinner series.

While the food was delicious, the best part of the evening for me was hearing Bryan and Michael talk about their mom, Sharon Mangine, who joined us at the event. They told stories about when they were growing up and their mom insisted that the entire family break bread together each evening at 5:30. Bryan said those dinners were a big reason why he and Michael entered the hospitality industry.

Like Mrs. Mangine, I too am the mother of sons. My husband and I take turns cooking dinner for them every night and sharing stories about our days at work and school. My boys share our delight in experimenting with new foods, hosting picnics in our backyard, and baking cakes for each others’ birthdays. Sometimes they even cook dinner for us.

Now that our sons are teenagers, our grocery bills have skyrocketed. Between our weekly trips to the grocery store and the farmers market, and the inevitable mid-week stop at the corner store when all the milk has disappeared from our refrigerator, we often spend hundreds of dollars on nutritious food to satisfy their bottomless appetites.

Bryan and Michael’s tribute to their mom helped me imagine what it might be like to be the mother of teenagers who doesn’t know where to go to get help buying groceries to quiet their rumbling stomachs, fuel their growth spurts, and sustain nightly family gatherings. I would be demoralized and furious.

The Voltaggio family’s generous support of Share Our Strength helps us ensure that every mom in Maryland can put food on her family’s table every night, and that her kids can experience suppertime as an oasis of security, satisfaction and love instead of instability and anxiety. Maybe one of them will even grow up to be a chef someday.

Thank you, Bryan and Michael … and thanks, mom.
