Cooking Matters’ Charmion Wood: A Hero of Every Day Life

ArkansasSodexo Foundation defines “Heroes of Everyday Life” as people who are investing time, talent, and spirit in helping those at risk of hunger. Last week Chuck Scofield and I had the honor of attending the Sodexo Foundation’s 12th annual dinner during which they honored young people and employees who have done just that – each sharing their own strength to fight childhood hunger in America. This year’s honorees were a diverse set of men and women, from different states and jobs within the company, but the common element among all of them was a heartfelt commitment to helping his or her community be a better, and healthier, place.

Among the Sodexo employees honored as a 2011 Hero of Everyday Life was Charmion Wood, who is the general manager at the Landon School in Bethesda, Maryland. She volunteers as the chef instructor for twelve classes with Share Our Strength’s Cooking Matters program through our local partner, the Capital Area Food Bank. Additionally, Charmion coordinates the distribution of leftover food from the Landon School that is picked up weekly by DC Central Kitchen. In gratitude for her extraordinary commitment to helping ensure that children and families in her community have access to nutritious food, she received a $5,000 grant from the Sodexo Foundation for the hunger-related charity of her choice, the Capital Area Food Bank. Congratulations, Charmion!

We were delighted to join nearly 1,000 people attending the dinner in giving Charmion, and the other honorees, a standing ovation in recognition of each person’s unique contributions, all sharing his or her strength to make a difference in the fight to end hunger in America. We were also glad to be there to take part in honoring the memory of Sodexo Foundation’s recently deceased former president, Steve Brady. Brady was a tireless champion of efforts to end hunger, and under his leadership, Sodexo has been a leader in supporting anti-hunger efforts. With a renewed and deepened commitment to ending hunger in the US through a pledge to commit $20 million in cash and in-kind support to the cause announced this January, Sodexo Foundation will continue Brady’s legacy. We are deeply appreciative of the support from Sodexo Foundation to Share Our Strength as we work to end childhood hunger in America.
