Braving the Snow for Food Network's Service Day at the Food Bank for NYC

breakfastThis past week staff from Share Our Strength and Food Network participated in a day of service at the Food Bank for New York City. The group braved snowy conditions in the Big Apple to make its way to the Food Bank’s Bronx warehouse, which stores and distributes more than 74 million pounds of food every year to help fight hunger in all five boroughs of New York City. This is the third year that Share Our Strength and Food Network have volunteered to lend a hand to help hungry New Yorkers.

As one of Share Our Strength’s No Kid Hungry Campaign core partners, Food Network has shown unparalleled support in the fight to end childhood hunger in America. This past fall, Food Network produced a No Kid Hungry PSA featuring campaign spokesperson Jeff Bridges. It has been running since November and has garnered $4 million of media impressions to date! Also, numerous on-air personalities have lent their voices in support of Share Our Strength’s fundraising platforms. Food Network’s popularity has allowed Share Our Strength to spread its message about No Kid Hungry to vast new audiences, which will help us reach our goals.

Food Network has also promoted a high level of employee engagement. This past holiday season, Food Network sent out an email blast to employees encouraging them to get involved in the fight to end childhood hunger by taking the No Kid Hungry pledge, making donations to Share Our Strength, and participating in a staff holiday auction. Nearly $6,000 was raised for Share Our Strength from the auction alone. Scripps (Food Network’s parent company) also contributed $5,000 as part of its holiday card outreach.

This employee commitment to Share Our Strength’s cause was on display again last week by staff from Food Network’s New York offices. During its afternoon of service at the Food Bank for New York City, the group organized and sorted enough food for over 3,100 meals! Support from respected corporate partners like Food Network is vital to the success of Share Our Strength; and when employees are so willing to share their strengths as well, it makes certain the achievement of our goal of ending childhood hunger in America.
