AFT is Baking and Making a Difference Every Day

Staff at the American Federation of Teachers (AFT) headquarters just hosted our first Share Our Strength’s Great American Bake Sale, raising $1450 to help end childhood hunger. AFT matched our donations, allowing us to proudly donate $2900 to the No Kid Hungry Campaign.
AFT members and staff know all too well that we can’t talk about the performance of our nation’s schools without also talking about the challenges our children face outside of school. Hunger, and its impact on a student’s ability to perform, concentrate and behave in school, is one of the most pervasive challenges that children face. No child should go hungry and no child should have to go to school hungry.
All of us—our staff and our members—do our best to make a difference in the lives of children every single day. Perhaps I’m biased, but I think we succeed every day, too! And although we know hosting a bake sale isn’t the answer to ending childhood hunger, it can be one of the answers. Bake sales do a great job of getting communities, neighbors and friends working together for a great cause. It raises awareness about childhood hunger and it puts smiles on the faces of those who participate. We were able to make a difference by baking (and eating) scones, quiches, cakes, tarts, and cookies, all while raising awareness in the community!
We are encouraging our own local affiliates and members to host their own bake sales and to continue what they do best—educating and training members, parents and the community about the effects of childhood hunger.

A great little project which keeps us aware of the existence of hunger in America--the land of plenty.
