No Kid Hungry New Orleans
Posted by Katie Dooley on Tuesday, November 16, 2010
Last week we launched our National No Kid Hungry campaign in Washington, D.C. with our spokesperson, Jeff Bridges. The very next day we were in New Orleans to kick off our first citywide No Kid Hungry Campaign. The launch was a great success! We were joined by our own Billy Shore, Mayor Landrieu, Bill Ludwig of USDA, Tracy Rosser of Walmart, and Carol Carter, the executive director or the Sojourner Truth Neighborhood Center where the launch took place. We had a great crowd of more than 60 people which included a group of charming fourth graders from the nearby Success Academy Program.
The event kicked off with the kids leading us all in the Pledge of Allegiance that was followed by compelling remarks from all our speakers. Mayor Landrieu is the first mayor in the country to step up and join Share Our Strength in our mission to end childhood hunger. He said, “We can do a lot more together than we can do by ourselves. Share Our Strength has helped us to understand the problem and how to fix it.”
There are 32,000 kids in New Orleans that eat free or reduced lunch. Less than half of them are eating school breakfast. Also, of those kids, only 13% of them participate in the summer meals program. All of our partners agree that this is unacceptable and we are confident that by working together we will be able to provide thousands of kid access to the food they deserve. As Bill Shore said, “This partnership would not be possible without Mayor Mitch Landrieu.” We have also teamed up with a number of local organizations in order to end childhood hunger in New Orleans. The No Kid Hungry New Orleans Campaign is supported by Walmart, ConAgra and C&S Wholesale Grocers. In addition to the No Kid Hungry Campaign we are also pleased to bring our Cooking Matters program to New Orleans. Cooking Matters will be a key component of our strategy to end childhood hunger in New Orleans by helping to educate families on providing healthy meals on a budget.
This is sure to be a great partnership and we look forward to sharing more news coming out of New Orleans as we work hard to end childhood hunger in the city.

I live in the New Orleans area and I would like to get involved with your organization. I read an article in New Orleans Living magazine and I immediatley looked for your website, but I found out that you have nothing here in NOLA established yet. Please keep me in mind when you do, I have a degree in Nutrition and would love to help educating!!! I am Latina as well, so I speak fluent Spanish/English and with the huge Latino influx that our city had after Katrina and Rita, we can help the Hispanic community as well. Thank you and keep up the good work! Rocio
