No Kid Hungry in Colorado

colorado coalition to end hungerYesterday, we launched the Campaign to End Childhood Hunger in Colorado with Governor Ritter, Lieutenant Governor O’Brien and Senator Bennett at Place Bridge Academy, part of the Denver Public Schools (DPS).

In our newly released Hunger in the Classrooms: Share Our Strength’s Teachers Report, more than 60% of teachers said that most or a lot of kids are coming to school hungry because they don’t have enough to eat. In Colorado alone, fewer than 38 percent of eligible children received school breakfast, and only 8.2 percent of eligible children received summer meals.

“Colorado Coalition to End Hunger is excited about the partnership we have embarked upon with Share Our Strength. We know, without a doubt, that together, we WILL end childhood hunger in Colorado. Failure is not an option - there are too many kids are counting on us.”

We applaud Governor Ritter’s Bill Ritter’s tremendous leadership in partnering with Share Our Strength and the Colorado Coalition to End Hunger (CCEH) to find solutions to the barriers that prevent kids and their families from accessing much needed nutrition resources.

There is enormous opportunity to quickly make progress addressing childhood hunger in Colorado, and the Campaign to End Childhood Hunger in Colorado will immediately work to increase the number of children getting nutritious meals in school breakfast and summer meals programs while developing a comprehensive plan to end Childhood Hunger in Colorado by 2015.
