My name is Janna dePorter and I am originally from Silver Spring, MD which is just outside of Washington, D.C. I went to high school in Washington D.C. and to college at Cornell University. I received my B.S. in Nutritional Sciences this past May. During my time at Cornell, I spent a semester abroad in Buenos Aires, Argentina. There I lived with a host family and took all of my courses at local Argentine universities which greatly improved my Spanish. I recently finished an internship at AED on the A2Z project, an international micronutrient supplementation and food fortification program. I’m very excited to be working with Cooking Matters because I love to cook and interact with people. Teaching people to cook empowers them to eat well and take care of themselves. I am looking forward to this year with AmeriCorps and Cooking Matters!

I begin my 1st class for a Cooking Matters series held at a local elementary school. The class is full of Spanish speaking women and a few of their children. My volunteers and I, all non-native Spanish speakers, will be conducting the series entirely in Spanish. I am hesitant to speak to these women in their native tongue for fear that I will butcher their language and not get my point across.
