Check out our staff Bake Sale!

If you were to have strolled through the vendors at the Capital Harvest on the Plaza Farmer’s Market on a recent Friday, you would have seen people selling organically farmed vegetables and fruits, as well as a variety of other interesting edibles, like homemade jams and salsas.
At the very end of the row was a different sort of food all together. Last Friday, the Great American Bake Sale staff hosted our very own Share Our Strength staff bake sale, much to the delight of the farmers market’s patrons.
All of the baked goods were made by members of our staff, except for the generous donation of 100 assorted cupcakes from the famous Georgetown Cupcake, which by themselves attracted quite a crowd. Aside from the glamorous “signature swirl” of the Georgetown beauties, we also sold homemade pies, rolled chocolate and apricot pastries, mandel bread, brownies, a cake, lemon bars, and peanut butter and jelly bars.
It was so much fun to be a part of the second installment of the summer staff bake sales, and tell customers we were selling delicious baked goods to raise money to help end childhood hunger in America. Let’s just say it was very hard for people to turn down our smiling faces (glistening from the DC heat), amazing cause, and scrumptious goodies.
Some customers who knew about Share Our Strength stopped us mid-sentence to tell us how much they love the organization and others picked up our informational materials.
One of the coolest parts of hosting a staff bake sale is the valuable experience that we can pass on to our participants. If someone calls and asks me about how to price their brownies, I can tell them about our popular brownies in cupcake liners that flew out of their basket at $2 each.
If you’re in the DC area, we’ll be hosting our 3rd staff bake sale of the summer this Friday, July 30. It will once again be at Capital Harvest on the Plaza at 13th and Pennsylvania. This week we’ll be featuring cupcakes donated by Red Velvet Cupcakery as well as treats prepared by the Share Our Strength staff.
And of course if you’re not in DC but you want to get involved, you can always throw your own bake sale!
