Operation Frontline Celebrates AmeriCorps Week
Posted by Hayley Beers on Monday, May 10, 2010
Today through Saturday, May 15 marks the fourth annual AmeriCorps Week, a time when AmeriCorps members, alums and programs shine a spotlight on the national service movement to promote volunteerism. Share Our Strength is proud to participate in the 2010 AmeriCorps week by highlighting our AmeriCorps National Direct program, now in its third year (before 2007 Share Our Strength managed an AmeriCorps VISTA program for six years).
Currently, 21 full and part-time AmeriCorps National Direct members perform valuable roles at Share Our Strength’s Operation Frontline® partner organizations in 12 states, coast to coast. Many members hold degrees in nutrition or the culinary arts and serve as chefs and nutritionists. They also manage logistics for Operation Frontline nutrition education programs, build the capacity of local Operation Frontline programs to serve more families and children, and recruit and train Operation Frontline volunteers. Since the launch of Operation Frontline’s AmeriCorps National Direct program our AmeriCorps members have successfully recruited over 350 Operation Frontline volunteer chefs and nutritionists! The AmeriCorps members ensure that courses offered locally are high quality and participants leave class each week having had a positive classroom/kitchen experience.
Share Our Strength is grateful to all of its Operation Frontline AmeriCorps members, men and women who have chosen to take 9 to 12 months to share their strengths. Without them, our local partners would not be able to provide enough Operation Frontline courses to meet the demand for nutrition education in their communities.
Our members are helping to teach families how to cook healthy meals on a budget and this week they will share stories and photos of their experiences working with Operation Frontline in communities across America. I hope you will be inspired to follow the lead of our members and find ways that you can get involved in the fight against hunger!
