Proud to Be a Power of Youth Honoree

On Saturday on the back lot of Paramount Studios in Los Angeles, I will be one of seven young actors honored by Variety Magazine at their annual “Power of Youth” event. Every year Variety acknowledges young entertainers and the charities that are important to them. It’s a huge block party at Paramount studios with live performances, games and food. Each honoree got to choose a charity to support for the event and I have chosen to highlight the work of Share Our Strength’s No Kid Hungry campaign because I believe that every child in our country should have access to nutritious food.
I am really excited that Variety chose me and that I have had a chance to do some work with Share Our Strength. I have been so fortunate in my own life; I’ve never struggled with hunger and I can’t imagine how it feels to be uncertain of meals or access to good food. When I was doing media interview for the movie True Grit, I had a chance to listen to Jeff Bridges talk about his work with Share Our Strength. As the national spokesperson for the No Kid Hungry campaign, Jeff has played a really big role in bringing the No Kid Hungry campaign national attention. He’s really a model for how a celebrity can support a worthwhile cause and I was really inspired by his hard work and dedication. I think he actually said “I think you have a “strength to share.” Listening to him and watching how much time he put into this cause made me realize I really had something to offer.
The thing I liked most about the No Kid Hungry campaign was that they already had a solution to ending childhood hunger. So, there’s enough food in America and there are these wonderful food programs – like school breakfast and lunch and summer meals – but they are just not reaching enough children. An important part of what the No Kid Hungry campaign does is improve these programs and make sure that they are connecting with the kids who need them. That seemed so sensible!
I’m so excited to be able to do something for others and all my friends and I are tweeting about the event. I’ll be in the Share Our Strength tent on Saturday getting people to take the No Kid Hungry pledge. We’ll be filming other young entertainers and asking them to share their strength. Stay tuned for some photos and videos from the event. I hope to help Share Our Strength get lots of new pledges!
