Thanksgiving on a Budget
Posted by Gregory Silverman on Monday, November 14, 2011
According to new numbers from the American Farm Bureau Federation, a family dinner will cost about 13 percent more this Thanksgiving than it did in 2010. The new data, released Thursday, shows everything from cranberries to pumpkin pie to turkeys is more expensive this year.
This comes at a time when more and more Americans are having trouble making ends meet. More than 16 million children live in poverty and the USDA reports one out of five children in this country are at risk of hunger. This holiday season, we’re working to make sure kids have access to healthy, nutritious meals where they live, learn and play.
Even though the traditional turkey dinner may be pricier, Cooking Matters has tips to help families on a budget celebrate this holiday season. Cooking Matters, which teaches families how to cook affordable, healthy meals, is debuting a new crop of delicious, fall-themed recipes that can help stretch a family’s food dollar. Each recipe was developed by a Cooking Matters volunteer chef.
These recipes are delicious, healthy and they won’t break the bank. This helps families avoid extra financial stress around Thanksgiving so they can focus on relaxing and celebrating with loved ones.

This is great information. I saw Jeff Bridges on Morning Joe last week, and am very excited about what Share Our Strength can do for school food. I am writing tonight about how to make a healthier Thanksgiving feast affordable. Thanks so much for this help.
