This summer, Share Our Strength is honoring innovative organizations that remove barriers and connect hungry kids with food through its new No Kid Hungry Innovation Awards. Share Our Strength will grant awards of $25,000 each to winning organizations in three different categories. Below, C&S Grocers’ Director of Community Involvement shares her perspective on the program and why C&S decided to fund it.

Having grown up in an Italian family, food was always in abundance during my childhood. Meals were prepared with consideration and love. So the idea—no, the fact—that there are kids going without food, without enough food, or without nutritious food is wholly unacceptable to me. It’s unacceptable to C&S Wholesale Grocers too.

When the team at Share Our Strength began brainstorming about the No Kid Hungry Innovation Awards as a way to highlight solutions, I knew it was an initiative we’d want to support. In communities from coast-to-coast, there are organizations taking action on behalf of kids who are hungry. And, there are great ideas and best practices to be shared.

Each No Kid Hungry nominee is compelling and is doing impactful, important work. I hope you’ll be inspired by their stories and that you’ll cast your vote for the organization you find most deserving. The first category, Beyond the Lunch Line: Feeding Kids When School Is Out, is closed but you can still read about the nominees on the Innovation Awards web page.

Voting in the current category, Making Connections: Reaching Hungry Kids Where They Are, is open until June 20. Vote today.

You can vote for nominees in the final category, Nourishing Communities: More Meals For More Kids, from June 21 to 30, and you can vote once a day, so please check back often. I think you’ll enjoy reading about the hunger heroes who make sure our kids will return to school in September, well nourished and ready to learn.
