conference of leaders

Authors Eli and Max Sussman served as the masters of ceremonies for the Leadership Awards presentation at our recent Conference of Leaders. Over the next few weeks, we will be doing a series of posts about those individuals in the Share Our Strength network that received this year’s awards. In the meantime, the full list of awards can be found on the Conference of Leaders website. Now, here’s an update from Eli and Max:

Hosting the Leadership Awards wasn’t tough at all. You know what was tough? Going on stage right after Billy Shore. He delivered a moving and captivating speech and the bar was set high before we even finished buttoning our suit jackets.

When D.C. called and asked us, we jumped at the chance to help honor the dedicated leaders, sponsors, chefs and volunteers who make Share Our Strength’s work possible. It was refreshing and invigorating to see a room filled with hundreds of people that have made time and made great sacrifices to help those in need. The goal of the evening was to honor the winners and nominees so we tried to keep the night light, fun and moving (reasonably) fast. The praise for how efficient the whole awards ran definitely should go to the SOS D.C. team. They prepped us like crazy, made us comfortable and most importantly, they gave us phonetic spelling of all names.

Besides a small snag during the first acceptance speech when one of mics was still live (embarrassment averted) neither of us tripped, went onstage with our fly undone or accidentally cursed to a room of 400+. And luckily we didn’t drop any of the award plates in the hand-offs (although all we kept thinking was “please don’t drop a plate…wow these plates are heavy…I hope I don’t drop a plate…”). Our only disappointment was that everyone graciously kept their phones on silent, which robbed us off the opportunity to force them to answer it and make the caller take the No Kid Hungry pledge over the phone. Hey, there’s always next year.

To all the winners, nominees and attendees, thank you for doing what you do in your cities and continuing to build on this year’s success.. Share Our Strength is an amazing organization doing real work on the ground all around the US to help end childhood hunger. We are so excited to seeing the greatness of what everyone in that room can accomplish moving forward.

Eli and Max Sussman are co-authors of the cookbook Freshman in the Kitchen.
