Share Our Strength’s Bill Shore Receives Jefferson Award

Posted by Debbie Shore on Wednesday, June 22, 2011

Billy ShoreLast night, my brother Billy [pictured on the right], the Founder and Executive Director of Share Our Strength, received the S. Roger Horchow Award for Greatest Public Service by a Private Citizen at the 2011 Jefferson Awards.

The Jefferson Awards are known as the “Nobel Prize for public service,” and Billy was in good company, as other recipients included Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, who received the award for greatest public service by an elected official. Past winners of the Horchow Award include Walter Cronkite, Jimmy Carter, and Ralph Nader. The evening ceremony was filled with inspirational stories and the people behind them. The concept behind Share Our Strength never rang more true than it did last night – whether you are an actor, a supreme court justice, a sports team owner or a restaurant owner, everyone has a strength to share. And in Billy’s brief remarks last night, he said that, “there is an insistence in receiving this award; that those of us who have a voice should use it for those who cannot.”

The Jefferson Award is a tribute to all who have played a role in Share Our Strength’s growth and success. We hope that media coverage of the event will encourage more Americans to share their strength to help ensure that no child goes hungry.
