Courtney Smith

Courtney Smith, Share Our Strength’s No Kid Hungry Program Director, manages the organization’s state partnerships to end childhood hunger. She has more than 15 years of experience working on programs and policies to improve the well-being of low-income families and children. Before joining Share Our Strength, Ms. Smith was a Senior Policy Analyst at the National Governors Association’s Center for Best Practices, where she provided technical assistance and consulting services to governors on a range of poverty and human services issues. From 1997 to 2001, she served as a Senior Policy Analyst at Berkeley Policy Associates where she led evaluations of welfare reform and workforce development programs at the state and local levels. She also worked as a researcher at the Public Policy Institute of California, the Literacy Assistance center of New York City, and the Program to Educate the Girl in Guatemala. Ms. Smith has a Master of Arts in Public Policy from the University of California at Berkeley and a Bachelor’s degree in English Literature and Women’s Studies from Grinnell College.

The Food Research and Action Center released a report this week about the state of “food hardship” in the U.S. The latest numbers show that food hardship stood at 18% in 2010, meaning that nearly one in five Americans struggled to afford enough food for their families last year, despite the recession easing.
