The Secret To This Football Team’s Success? After-school meals.
Posted by Clay Dunn on Friday, January 20, 2012
The CBS evening news ran a story this week about the football team in Burke County, Georgia, where 85% of students qualify for free or reduced price school lunch and breakfast. Four years ago the school’s football noticed that his team had no energy and often complained of being hungry. He took matters into his own hands, and worked with the school to apply for after school meals for 500 low-income students through the Healthy Hunger-Free Kids Act.
What happened next is like something out of a Disney movie. The team went from struggling on the field, to state champions. You can see the story below. It’s worth watching, and it’s a good reminder of the challenges kids across the country face every day. Kids who aren’t getting fed not only can’t perform on the sports field, they struggle in the classroom, too. Their hunger impedes their ability to concentrate and learn. We hear stories like this time and again from principals and teachers, who see it firsthand every day.
That’s why our No Kid Hungry campaign is advocating for school breakfast across the country, getting eligible kids enrolled in breakfast programs so they start the day at their very best. Today’s hungry, struggling student can be tomorrow’s superstar. Just like in Burke County.
