Volunteering with Cooking Matters

Cooking MattersThe best part about being involved in the Cooking Matters program is to have the opportunity to actually see the difference that is being made in the lives of our participants. The people that participate in Cooking Matters not only receive groceries, a Cooking Matters course book, and other incentives. They also receive specialized instruction from professional chefs and nutritionists as well as invaluable skills that will last them a lifetime.

Teaching our participants cooking skills and healthy eating is just the beginning. Cooking Matters is so much more than that. We prepare meals together, we eat together, we learn from each other. Many of our volunteers have expressed to me, after a completed Cooking Matters class, how much they have learned from the participants and the other instructors. It really is a team effort.

Before I became an AmeriCorps member with Cooking Matters, I was a nutrition instructor volunteer. In my role as a volunteer, I never realized how much went into the set-up of the program. I now realize how many amazing volunteers give their time and knowledge to work with fellow professionals to help their neighbors fight their battles with hunger.

This has been an amazing, eye-opening experience that I am very grateful for. Cooking Matters is a great program and I hope that it continues to grow in order to reach many more people, and touch even more lives.
