coins for kidsThat’s what students are saying at Shadow Hills Elementary School in Alpine, California, a rural community outside of San Diego. A class of 22 first and second graders became inspired when they learned about the enormous number of children in America who are experiencing hunger. After taking the No Kid Hungry pledge, they launched their own service learning project called “Coins for Kids.” The children began bringing in their coins and they haven’t stopped! For meaningful math lessons, they graph and count all those coins regularly. The students also wrote a speech and created a “Coins for Kid” song which invited other classrooms to join them as leaders in helping to end childhood hunger in America. Their next step was to host a fund-raising event at a local family Mexican restaurant, Manana’s, which was a great success and inspired them even more. Now they are hosting another community event at a local yogurt shop. The word about “No Kid Hungry” is spreading which is the ultimate goal. Amazingly these kids are nearing the $1,000 mark. With motivated little fundraisers like these, who knows what lies ahead? We’ll keep you posted!

Here are what some of these Shadow Hills students are saying about their “Coins for Kids” project:

  • “I like bringing money into class and feeding lots of children for a month!” - Jackie
  • “Doing this project is fun!” - Mackenzie
  • “I can’t believe we are actually feeding and helping kids!” - Chance
  • “All of us at Shadow Hills School are feeding hungry kids in America!” - Josh
  • “Maybe more kids can join us!” - Dillen
